- A City of Energy Vampires
- Camille talks Harvard tours, high school boyfriends, and her chat with Sebastian.
Hello All!
This was the second to last episode (or penultimate in SAT books) of the show and I can’t believe how quickly time has gone by for me. As the show comes to its dénouement it really begins to encapsulate the high-intensity lifestyle that most people in New York experience, and what makes the city unique. Candace Bushnell is famous for writing Sex and the City and I love her description of New York as:
"...a city of energy vampires – people really feed on each others’ energies and that’s why New Yorkers talk fast and gesture and they’ll come in and say ‘Oh my God you won’t believe what happened!’ That’s a normal greeting in New York."
One example of this is Taylor’s relationship with Cole; in a very short time-frame Cole went from being the ex-boyfriend, to boyfriend, to the ex-boyfriend yet again. If no one understood why I didn’t want a serious boyfriend in high school, can you understand now? While having a boyfriend certainly comes with “benefits” it can also add to the unnecessary and sometimes petty drama that I already get from other aspects of my life even without the quickly changing tides of relationships. I like both Taylor and Cole and I really hope that they can either work things out or move on amicably.
Regarding this episode’s first scene, here’s a French word for Sebastian: touché. I love verbal jousting and being witty (although witty is basically just a fancy word for smart aleck,) but Sebastian really did get me at our meeting at the art gallery. I think both Sebastian and I have different means of attaining the same end (i.e. staying single,) so neither one of us can fully empathize with the other’s situation (or for that matter give each other advice.)

OMG, have you checked the 2010 College Rankings?
7.9%!!!!!! (you'll know what i'm referring to) If you already made it in you should "get in touch" with Scarlett. ;)

You are the only one who I'd like to see where you are in 10-20 yrs. I think you are one solid, intense young lady who has more drive and focus than anyone I've ever seen at your age. I also think you're not as frigid as you seem on the show. A young Samantha I think.

Camille,
Here’s another French saying Sebastian needs to learn: Savoir Faire.
This could probably explain why there’s such the gap in how the end is justified by your means versus his; most specifically I am referring to your comments regarding what charity work really is. Compassion is one of the most powerful and many times the most unexpected human characteristics. To truly feel the power of this, one must stay true to its original intent and that is the unconditional act of assisting those who are in need. However, we as humans fall so easily under the temptation of power that most often it is accompanied and masked under by the original intent of being charitable.
The following sayings by Jessie and Sebastian demonstrate this point so clearly (these are not verbatim):
Jessie after the Smile event <
> (seriously makes you want to ask, was this event for charity work, or just to make Jessie feel incredible?) Sebastian at his well building event <
> <
> (not much to say here except adolescent boys are pretty predictable) Unfortunately, Camille….I feel you could have and should have handled much better your reactions to how events unfolded for you….keep in mind that no one likes to eat sour grapes. You can’t control other people’s actions or attitudes, only your own. I urge you next year as a Leader and a Senior, that each day you wake up and ask yourself “Today…Do I want to be a better woman, or a bitter woman?”
This is also applies to your romantic relations….as you get older you will soon release you can’t just pick and choose who or when this happens. For example, Sebastian believes he has found the answer to all his problems <
> Yeah, sure….that is, in the end, all that is needed to truly fulfill your life!!!!
One more comment I’d like make regarding Sebastian’s flawless hair and even more flawless logic: <
> Yes, Sebastian you are a dog, especially considering the amount of ice alone used during that event would be the same amount of water produced a year by one of your wells, yet all you were thinking about was your ------ and your hair. Good luck in finding your hot b!tches.

You're the only rational one on the show.
I understand your intentions behind biting your tongue when confronted by that orange creation, (Jessie) but you need to put her in her place. You shine a light on young intelligent women who are NOT blindly taken over by guys and fashion, like every other female under twenty. People like you give me hope in humanity once again.

PS - Jesse seems more than a little full of herself. AND BTW FIT basically has open acceptance, it's ridiculous she's bragging about it.

Camille,
You once said something along the lines of, "I don't know any other 17 year old girl who has a stylist without having a professional career", regarding Kelli's experience with her new stylist, but at the beginning of the season, YOU had a stylist come and (attempt) to clean out your closet. What did you mean by that comment?

Hi Camille,
Promise yourself that when you are in a position to show Harvard to hopeful attendees (and you will be, I am certain) that you will NOT keep Scarlett's "cycle of abuse" going. Someone probably treated her that way when she came for a tour as a young woman; trying to belittle her and play on any insecurities she may have had. So she, in turn, tried to do that to you. She came off as pretentious and a real boor.
She didn't know who she was dealing with, did she?

During the season i notice you seemed a bit jealous of kelli starting her singing career. You should be more supporting instead of questioning everything shes doing. Thats what friends are for right?

Camille,
I love you on the show! You are always very funny and seem very down to earth. I feel like you'd get along with almost anyone!

camille you're so smart and pretty and totally amazing, but i think you need to be a little less stand-offish if you know what i mean. you come off as a snotty smart girl when you're actually really nice. try to keep your social life and your academic life separate so that your friends and people that you meet don't think you're snotty, because you're not at all.
you're actually probably the best person on this show. a good head on her shoulders with goals and morals. good for you.

Camille,
You are the most grounded on the show & the most likable in my book. I think you have made very wise decisions on the show & will do very well at whichever school you choose. You are the type of person who will always do well at life & i wish you well on your journey. Remember to have some fun too, lol

I am watching Miami social and I can't help but compare the two programs. although the people on Miami are 10-20 years older I find that you are more mature than they are. Is it me? Do others agree with what I feel? I see the pople on the program very immature for the most part, but when I think well on NYCC Prep are 15-18 years old and they act older than the wanna be younsters in Miami.

Don't worry about a boyfriend you'll have enough time for that later just concentrate on your school like you've been doing it.
On another note, why is it that you always grill people but the minute your getting grilled (like by Sebastian) you can't handle it. Just answer the questions honestly.

Hi there,
You seem to be such a determined and motivated person, and that's a quality that can really be admired. I figured you'd be the best to answer a question like this. I don't know if you saw this article, but a group of girls, not from the show, give their opinion on growing up in NYC, but they do not live in the Upper East or West side. They go on to disassemble some of the mystifying qualities that make the life of you and the other members on the cast so exciting, and something so impressive to the viewers. Do you think that there is any validity to their claims?
I really love the show, and secretly wish that I could have a life like yours. You're the character that I feel is the most in touch with not only yourself, your family and your surroundings, but also with reality and the rest of the world. I really wish to emulate your strength in your convictions, and I'm super impressed with how you are the only cast member that continues to blog every week. If you're ever in Chicago - I'd love to meet you.

Camille visit others schools. Harvard does offer prestige and an intellectual environment. But, Harvard is not the only school out there. I personally looked at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Columbia. What I found during my visits were institutions that fostered specialized students that lacked overall balance in life. Pick a school that gives you balance, stimulates your intellect, provides a lifelong network of friends, has a recognized name and a place that you can have a little fun, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Notre Dame. You will never regret it. I did not.

Also, the actual Harvard faculty are not as condescending as that guide. I can say, as a Neurobiology concentrator, that the life sciences departments contain some great mentors, and there's so much for you to look forward to in terms of research opportunities.
Anyway, you're the only person on the show I can remotely identify with. Ignore them laughing if your idea of fun is "spending a lot of time with scientists"...because it actually is fun, even if you sometimes have to decrypt a message written in amino acid code to figure out where the scientists are hanging out.

Just happened to catch the episode with the Harvard tour. The tour guide's (and she isn't on the faculty: http://www.harvard.edu/directories/index.php) explanation of the gorilla suit was slightly incorrect. It looked like you were visiting on Housing Day, the morning that spring-semester freshmen receive hand-delivered letters from upperclassmen welcoming them to the House they will be in for the next three years, judging by the Leverett House posters on the bulletin board. Each house pulls various stunts and demonstrations of house spirit. The gorilla suit guy is a Mather House tradition. I think the local news once caught the sidewalk by Annenberg during Housing Day and wrote it up as some kind of bizarre political rally before anyone bothered to fact-check.

Camille i think that you embody everything that new york represents you're intelligent, witty, and sophisticated which is a very refreshing quelity in a teenager since i am one and speak from experience. i have to say though that there is something peculiar about Taylor although i can't point it out exactly. she tries way too hard to fit in with the upper crust of the social scene and it shows. i feel that we never get to sse who she really is, its all a facade to please and impress others especially pc. and sebstian to be honest he seems like a nice guy but physically i don't see anything attractive about him so im surprised he gets so many girls.

Hi Camille,
You're my favorite of the show and the most inspirational to me. I admire your determination to get into a top school, and I'm rooting for you to get into Harvard!

Scarlet is actually a real estate agent in Cambridge and, though she did go to Harvard ('93) she isn't a professor or even a lecturer she is a TF (a teaching fellow), which is what Harvard calls teaching assistants... I guess she is still in grad school too based on that, not sure...anyhow, she is hardly a faculty member. She has no authority and should not have acted as if she did.
Anyhow, thousands of people have gone to Harvard over the years and it is a great school but it is just a school....once you are there, if you are a normal person, you'll forget all about being at one of the most competitive (to get into) schools in the world and you'll just do your work and your sports and your job and you'll have a great time too.

Hey Camille I can't wait for next weeks finale. I'm watching the episode where you and Kelli went to Harvard right now. As you stated in your blog, you said Kelli said it best when it came to colleges and exploring the different opinions, from what I observe, unlike you who's ambition is on Harvard alone. I think it's great your so ambitious when it comes to college, but when you said Kelli thought it was a joke, I felt your were trying to be a little condescending. Everybody doesn't not want to go to college, and college is not for everybody. I'm sure Kelli doesn't not feel as if college is a joke, but at the same time she's just keeping her options open.
Furthermore, as I saw the preview of the finale, I saw you confront the organizers of Operation Smile and try to blame Jessie for not letting you apart of it. Everyone who has common sense can tell you were just trying to get on because you want your application to Harvard to be some grandiose and glamorous package. Don't blame others for your short comings. And besides, if Jessie didn't let you on it, why didn't you just go to the website and find somebody in your area!? Real smart, Harvard.

You have so much going for you, Camille! You write beautifully, you are very well-spoken and you are beautiful. You will have more than your share of boys to choose from when you get to college. The quality and quantity in the selection of boys goes way, way, way up in College so it's really great that you've not wasted precious time and energy on high school boys. Granted, things have simply turned out that way, but later.. you'll be so glad that you focused on the right thing. You will have no regrets in that department. It is possible to have fun in High School without being joined at the hip to a boy.

You have plenty of time to date in college and after, focus on school right now.
As for Sebastian, he was clearly crushed by Taylor.
Taylor seems to possess something extra special in the opposite sex department, a charismatic female quality for attracting the males around her.
Cole, Sebastian and even PC..... (yes PC...,he clearly has an attraction to her as well).
He really liked her was perhaps falling in love with her, and she really disrespected his feelings at that dinner party of yours ( but she is only 15) she should not be dating at all yet. I do believe he did cry that night (seb I mean). He was hurt and still is... and probably will be until he falls in love with another girl.
Take it easy on him, if you still see him. I know this show was filmed some time ago.
Sincerely,
California girl

You are amazing and you made such a good point about Sebastian, he was on several of dates on the show and they were all unsuccessful. I def feel like he is lying about his "hooking up" status with girls, b/c from all of the dates he been on the show none of them actually went well LMAO!!besides that you are soo intelligent and I'm sure you will get into Harvard, no doubt about it. I also go to school in the UES (68th and Lexington) and its soo cool watching the show and seeing places I go to like the time you and Maite went to Alice's Teacup, they srsly sell the best cupcakes lol I also cant wait for the finale, but I dont want it to end either :((
